Main image for post: Is orange really the new black?

Research by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders released last month has revealed that grey has overtaken black as the UK’s most popular new car colour for the first time ever.

Not surprising we hear you cry, but what may make you stand up and take notice is that orange cars are swiftly gaining in popularity, with an increase of 37% compared to last year to claim spot number seventh in the annual colour chart.

The top five new car colours by market share according to the data was:

• Grey with 21% of the market share

• Black (20%)

• White (18%)

• Blue (16%)

• Red (10%)

Beige was also named as a colour to watch, coming in at number 10 with an increase of 28% compared to last year.

So what does that mean for the used car market? Matt Kay, Managing Director from Cartime, said: “Whilst grey and black cars are always going to popular, we love spicing up our forecourt with some more colourful options to entice our customers – after all there are no clear-cut rules when it comes to what people want to drive. A car can say a lot about someone so why not go loud and bold?!

“We are big fans of the orange car trend and can’t wait to see more used models appearing at our sales centres. However, we always say that if we don’t have a make and model in stock in the colour that you want – we will do our very best to source it for you. So don’t be shy – whether it’s orange, yellow or pink – we are certain to have the car for you!"
